Le Royaume de Ganesha
The Komodo dragon
The Komodo Dragon is the largest species of lizard in the world, it measures up to 3.5 metres and can weigh more than 100 kg. It was not discovered by Western science until the early 20th century due to the relative isolation of its island habitat. Its terrifying look, long forked tongue, powerful claws and prehistoric reptile gait have earned it the nickname of dragon... but it doesn't breathe fire!
It is a carnivore, mainly a scavenger but it also feeds on live preys when it can catch them. Capable of short bursts of speed, it rather hunts on the lookout, camouflaged in the bushes of the dry savanna: surprising monkeys, boars or deer, goats and even Asiatic Water Buffalo. Either it knocks them out on the spot or inflicts them bites that get infected because of its saliva and kill the prey a few days later from septicaemia. The female lays about20 eggs that she incubates for several months. The young lizards start a perilous life, taking refuge in the trees to escape predators, including adult lizards. Only 4 to 5000 individuals survive in the wild and it is quite rare to observe them in captivity.
In Pairi Daiza, you can observe 3 Komodo dragons:
